FAQ’s over MM en dansen

Movement Medicine is a body-based movement meditation practice that will reconnect you to the wisdom of living from the heart, the joy of knowing who you are and the satisfaction of making your unique contribution to life.

Q: How do I find a Movement Medicine class or workshop?
A: Information about my classes and workshops are listed on this  website. You can check the agenda.

Q: What is the difference between a class and a workshop?
A class is a 1,5-3 hour event for drop-in or regular practice. A workshop is a day, a weekend or longer and gives more time to explore.

Q: Do I need to be a certain age and have a dance background?
A: With or without dance experience, you are welcome. People of all ages and backgrounds come to Movement Medicine. From 18 year olds to 80 year olds: doctors, nurses, writers, builders, teachers, mathematicians, musicians, yoga teachers, ballet dancers, belly dancers, accountants, teachers and trapeze-artists, engineers, theatre directors, lawyers, and many, many others.

Q: I feel shy! What should I do?
A: You are not alone. Most people feel shy when beginning something new. We specialise in supporting people to move from self-consciousness to consciousness. I will not put you on the spot, there is no one watching and evaluating you, and you will be able to take your time. Most people find that they are able to relax and enjoy the exploration surprisingly fast, and that the overall ambience of respect and support quickly helps you feel at ease.

Q: I have never danced before. Am I welcome?
A: Of course! You are able to dance even if you feel as if you have two left feet! There are no steps to learn. You will be guided, supported and instructed in how to discover the dancer that’s already awake inside you.

Q: I have danced, but only steps. Will Movement Medicine help me?
A: We welcome everyone. The vocabulary you have gained by learning a style of dance will be a wonderful palette for your improvised dance, and you can explore way beyond it.

Q: I practice other forms of dance and spiritual practice. Will participating in Movement Medicine confuse me?
A: Not at all. You can eat Chinese food on Monday and Italian on Wednesday. Your digestion will deal with it. The only thing that matters is that you follow what is true for you and we are confident that you are more than intelligent enough to integrate the many things that can support you on your journey.

Q: Am I too old?
A: If you can move you can dance! You will be supported to go at your own pace. You can even sit down if or when you need to and go on moving and being part of the dance when you are ready.

Q: What should I wear?
A: Clothes to move in. There is no uniform, you just need to be able to move freely. Layers are useful so you can monitor your temperature. Don’t wear heavy jewellery, socks or chew chewing gum as these things can be dangerous.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: A bottle of water (preferably one that you can re-use), and yourself!

Q: I need alcohol or drugs to dance! Is there such a thing as ecstasy without drugs?
A: Welcome to a new adventure! Often the need for alcohol or drugs to feel free enough to let go and dance is because we have not learnt how to give ourselves permission, and the alcohol or drugs act as a kind of placebo to convince ourselves that we can be free. It’s not that drugs are not powerful, but that our own minds are much more so. You will learn how to “warm up” and connect your body, heart and mind, connect with the other people, and the spirit of the dance, and then it all happens naturally. Ecstatic dance has been part of the human journey for millennia. Getting there under your own steam is the deepest it can get – and there’s no hangover!
